Meat at public rituals

topic posted Mon, February 21, 2005 - 2:11 PM by  Amethyst
How do you feel about attending a ritual if afterward the food will include non-vegan foods?

It makes me cringe. I don't like to attend such rituals knowing that nearby the energy of the ritual is a table of animal foods.

I am lucky enough to have a circle of friends who do vegan-only potlucks after rituals. But, I know everyone isn't as lucky. What are your situations, and how do you feel about it?

I Priestess public rituals, where the food ranges from meat centric, to vegan. While I'm no fan of looking at meat, I am rather proud that there is such a wide range of options, and free discussion of the issue.

I make sure there is always one or two vegetarian options, and I usually bring a couple of vegan treats.

I've found that over time more and more people are trying to be accomidating, so the food is shifting to being more vegan friendly.

yes I must say it makes me cringe also to see any meat anywhere anytime .

Particularly after cerimony or gathering where we are all being blessed in the light of the Most High . It can be like a dreamy illusion . The conscious way to be is to just observe the situation and quietly bless those partaking towards becoming more grounded in the Light .

These are the signs that we are higher consciousness . But not superior . Just keep your light shining and all beings surely will follow your loving guidance sister!

It's wonderful that you have your circle , I had life long pure vegans in my circle in Eugene , but down here in south oregon I am having trouble finding even a few who aren't vegan only for dietary reasons . PLenty of raw foodist tho ,believe it or not some of them are eating raw meat!

      Raw meat...Eeeeew. Gross.

I've been to some public rituals which did have meat closeby at the table, and it made me so uncomfortable the whole time. I have a hard time focusing on the ritual when there is meat around. ESPECIALLY if it's a Samhain event...and people are supposed to be honoring the dead. It's not very honorable to honor the dead and then eat the dead who have been tortured on factory farms to be brought to your table right after the rite. It's a p*ss poor excuse when they say "but I thank and honor the spirit of the animal I'm about to eat"...Oh, really? Why didn't you have the decency to honor his life and not pay for him to be tortured, killed, and brought to your table? But, you are claiming to be "honoring" him before eating him?

They'll even call the animal spirits to be part of the magical circle, and pretend to honor them although they are about to eat animals who were terribly abused on factory farms.

It's just as bad as when my dear vegan friend died, and his mother served meat after his funeral to funeral-goers.

Sorry to be so negative, I'm not generally a negative person, but this issue really gets under my skin. I'm sick of people pretending to be respectful toward animals while in the middle of doing something totally disrespectful to them.

Oh, and in response to Watrfae's comment:
"I've found that over time more and more people are trying to be accomidating, so the food is shifting to being more vegan friendly. ":

Yes, I do appreciate when that happens! I know we can't just expect to show up one day and realize that everyone became vegan overnight. I do really appreciate it when people are cool enough to provide vegan options. It really shows that they care more than just about themselves.

I've got to say though, sometimes it's the opposite way, and very disappointing. For example, here in Pittsburgh, the "Witches' Ball" and many other public gatherings used to always be "vegetarian food only", and nobody really minded! But, then the organizer kind of retired from organizing, and when new people took over, it was meat, meat, meat.
Sad to see things go downhill rather than uphill in this case.
